From the man who brought you ‘there’s an egg in my tea… oh no it’s the sun’, and when comprehending a low carb diet ‘no chips and no potatoes’, we have a new entry.

Unfortunately, you just cannot get the staff these days! Although we have two groundstaff currently employed, this did not stop the pitch being wetter than de nile and speaking of denial we still do not know who should have put the covers on! So, with this in mind the skip decided to move the start time back a couple of hours, nothing wrong so far right? However, the skip chose to inform the opposing Blackheath skipper via email, thus meaning he did not receive it in time and was at the ground for the original start time. Now there may be some among you who feel email is the modern letter, how romantic of the skipper, how personal. Some among you may be feeling it is almost a throwback to a bygone era, a real Shakespearian vibe. The opening line being ‘is this a puddle I see before me?’ What a quip. Those of you who feel this have never spoken to Sam Montgomery for longer than five minutes.

One thing the skip did get right was to insert the opposition on a deck so wet you could have drowned a goldfish (Hamish you are allowed to bowl first if you like). Blackheath’s opening stand of 32 would prove to be vital, the first wicket coming from C Burnham and caught by one of the fielders whose poor fielding performance last week resulted in Pat’s temper tantrum #littlefeet. Wickets then continued to fall at regular intervals, with two gift wrapped bows attached run outs and wickets for four of the five bowlers. Catching and groundwork was much improved this week and bowlers were the happy recipients of this. A peak at the economy rates will tell you that the bowling was sometimes fortuitous and not always probing. Three wickets a piece for Ganny and Matt Wilson who were the pick of the lads chucking it down the other end.

The Heath needed 118 for victory, and with an opening stand of 39 they were on the right track. Unfortunately, the opening stand was as good as it got, wicket after wicket proceeded for minimal outlay. Contrastingly, peeking at the economy rates of the Blackheath bowlers, they were tighter than Ben Moore getting a round in. Hally, Burnham and Moore were the only three bats to reach double figures and this sadly meant victory never quite came. The Heath all out for 89.

There were some positives drawn upon after the game, although the post-mortem afterwards went on longer than most episodes of Silent witness.

We go again next week with a visit to Folkestone; it is time for the batting line up to take responsibility and put some runs on the board. When this batting line up clicks into place there will be some opposing bowling attacks having their own skipper do an Amanda Burton impression.
