After slaughtering Bexley we were heading into this game with a lot of confidence looking to make it 3 wins in 3. Our preparation for this game wasn’t ideal, the wicketkeeper making debut, our inform opening batsmen and our opening bowler who has been compared to Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood in the heat were delayed and only arrived at start time.
Luckily it was the hottest day of the year so confidence was high having Patty Cummins in the side... Charlie opened the bowling with some success, 1-21 off 7, however Cummins wasn’t able to pull his weight, significantly more weight then last season, as he finished up on 0-24 off 4.
Spud was the first change and although he managed to restrict the batsmen to less than a run a ball his baron spell continued. Frisby was sent on at the other end, playing through injury and making sure everyone knew how dedicated he was, in hindsight we should have left him at home... The captain stepped up to show us how it was done or not done in this case. The last roll of the dice was to send the grenade thrower Ganny on, who knew 20mph half trackers would work so well as he picked up his 2nd Heath 5fer 5-37 off 6. Nearly a decade since his first 5fer against Gravesend Under 16’s.
Hayes finished on 193/6, a par score on a concrete deck.
We were off to a flyer and it looked like we would chase this down with 10 wickets remaining, although Mr 40 then get out decided to live up to his name. A Bizzle out for 43, Heath 102-1. This was the start of the collapse as the middle order decided to send a binary code message, Barks 1, Ciaran 0, Ganny 0 and Archibald 0. In between these short lived innings was a very entertaining 14 ball expedition. Elegant stroke play, flexible hamstrings and agility to get back in his crease meant I had worked really hard to be 6-3 in my innings - Hayes were filming the game and if anyone ever needs a laugh or cheering up please do watch me struggle on YouTube.
George was still in, although had not faced a ball in 6 overs. Eventually he had enough and bottled the chase by missing a straight one, 59 valuable runs. Chimp and Frisby were now at the crease with the game looking out of sight, both did themselves justice scoring 34 and 15. Before we lost there was more comedy in our batting lineup, what should have been a very easy 2 wasn’t so easy for the athlete that is Alex McCann and he was back in the changing room after only facing a ball.
A game which we know we should have won, especially with the platform set by Al and George but we move on to next week with Bromley in our sights.
Reason for match report: Comical innings and poor Pat Cummins impression.
