Coach’s Match Report – Bexleyheath U15As vs Bexley

Andy Maxted

Less cold and windy but still unsettled.

After winning the toss, we chose to field on a decent, reliable wicket and made a strong start. Ollie led the way with an excellent early spell, picking up 2 wickets for just 8 runs, and was well supported by Jaiden, who also took 2 important wickets. Jake and Azaan chipped in to keep the pressure on, and there was good energy in the field throughout.

However, missed opportunities proved costly. A number of dropped catches allowed Bexley to rebuild, and they took full advantage. Strong contributions from their top order, followed by an excellent unbeaten 47 from their No.6, helped them reach 157 for 6 from 20 overs.

In response, we showed positive intent with the bat. Atharva got us off to a solid start, and contributions from Aniketh and Suchet kept us in the contest. Ollie played a composed unbeaten innings of 38, while Jake added a quick 25, giving us momentum through the middle overs.

It’s also important to recognise the value of contributions right across the team. Ben was composed and dependable behind the stumps, taking a key catch and maintaining a strong presence throughout the innings. The overall fielding effort reflected real commitment and resilience, even as the match became more challenging. A particular highlight was the often overlooked but vital skill of backing-up, which is crucial for cutting off overthrows and saving valuable runs. Jaineel performed this role brilliantly, showing excellent awareness, positioning and discipline which is exactly the standard we are looking for.

We finished on 119 for 4, falling short on the day. While there were plenty of positives, particularly with the ball and individual contributions, the key moments ultimately made the difference.

To take the next step, we must be more consistent in the basics.
- Catching is an area we need to sharpen as missed chances gave away momentum and allowed Bexley to post a higher total than we should have let them reach.
- With the bat, we need to build longer partnerships and maintain scoreboard pressure rather than relying on individual contributions.
- Staying switched on for the full 20 overs, in terms of concentration, communication, and decision-making, will be crucial.

If we tighten these areas, we’ll give ourselves a much stronger chance of turning performances like this into wins.
